Main challenge for greenhouse technology here is - high levels of solar radiation , high ambient temperatures leading to high cooling loads , severe shortage of water making evaporative cooling less feasible. Area Greenhouse (AAG) was developed to address these challenges. It employs earth-tube-heat-exchanger (ETHE) for cooling and heating. It also employs shade nets and natural ventilation. These measures have made it possible to carry out cultivation in greenhouse over ten months in a year , increase yields and reduce water usage significantly over open-fields. Usage of water in cooling is considerably reduced except in May and June when some evaporative cooling becomes necessary. Work is ongoing to further reduce the cost of ETHE by using plastic pipes ( instead of metal) and develop solar driven brackish water desalination for use in greenhouse irrigation.
